Household Hazardous Waste Facility: Paint Products
Paint products, such as latex and oil-based paint, turpentine, strippers, varnishes, wood preservatives, paint brush cleaners and thinners, are flammable and some are also toxic and corrosive.
Recycling Paint and Paint Products
- At the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, latex paint is recycled into "Old Paint" latex primer. This primer is available to various community groups and organizations for civic projects.
- New or nearly new products are stored at the Public Reuse Center and given away on a first come, first served basis.
- Oil-based paints, solvents and other chemicals that are not suitable for the reuse center are shipped to an EPA-regulated incinerator.
Alternatives to Paint Products
- Use water-based or latex paints or natural earth preservatives. These products produce fewer emissions (VOC's) that may pollute our air.
- Use water-based wood preservatives as a safe alternative to oil-based preservatives.
- Use sandpaper or a heat gun instead of a liquid furniture stripper, if you know that the paint does not contain lead or other heavy metals.
